About This Spot

Stepping into Meare Shop & Tearooms feels like finding a quiet, comforting pause just steps from the water’s edge. Nestled on the tranquil shores of Thorpeness Mere, this spot invites you to slow down and take in the gentle rhythms of village life—from the soft murmurs of friendly chatter to the occasional glide of boats on the lake. The pace here is unhurried, a perfect match for a wide wooden table or a sunlit seat by the window, where you can linger over moments rather than rush through them.

This is the kind of place where the air smells faintly of freshly ground coffee and warm baked goods. The tearoom’s charm is in its blend of simple, honest fare with a relaxed lakeside setting. Whether you’re wrapping your hands around a comforting latte or savoring a flaky sausage roll, each bite connects you to local flavors and inviting textures. Cakes and scones appear with a homemade warmth, while heartier options like pulled pork loaded fries add a touch of surprising indulgence to the menu.

Beyond the offerings on the plate, Meare Shop & Tearooms gently hums with a sense of everyday community. It’s a favored stop not just for a quick coffee but for a brief retreat where parents can share a quiet slice of cake while children chase the breeze, and where visitors find themselves pausing to appreciate views across the mere. Nearby, curious souls might explore the quirky village on horseback-drawn tours or wander to the beach just a few minutes away, with Meare Shop acting as the welcoming threshold to these experiences.

The shop itself adds a quaint layer to the visit, dotted with local sweets and souvenirs that feel more like treasures picked up from a friend’s kitchen than from a tourist shelf. It’s the kind of place where the baristas greet you by name and the atmosphere is less about hurried transactions and more about those little, honest human moments that often go unnoticed.

Meare Shop & Tearooms isn’t about flash or fuss; it’s a refuge for those who appreciate a thoughtful meal in a peaceful setting, accompanied by the gentle presence of the mere just outside the window. It’s a spot for returning visitors and newcomers alike, where the simplest pleasures are quietly celebrated with warmth and care.

Lovely lakeside cafe and shop. Had pulled pork loaded chips which were excellent. Great service, very friendly.

Busy Shop & Tea Room, good selection of drinks/food/ice creams. Good prompt service, great setting with amazing views across the Meare. Plenty of seating, I was able to park my motorcycle close by. Good clean toilets.

A really lovely location for a cuppa and a bite to eat on the edge of Thorpeness Mere. Just 5 minutes from the beach. Horsedrawn tours of the quirky village of Thorpness and the Benjamin Brittain memorial leave from the front door. Food is good and locally sourced. Service can be patchy and food service ends quite early but location is hard to beat.

Lovely place to sit and enjoy a cup of tea and a piece of cake overlooking the boating lake. Lots of other tasty food available also, including a good range of gluten free options, all at very reasonable prices. Well worth a visit!

Another place know like the back of my hand. Really friendly people. They have an excellent selection of cakes and sandwiches. The prices are reasonable and on a good day, sit out and watch the mere. They are good on gluten free. There is a small shop with souvenirs and sweets too. We used to go just for the cheesecake made by a French guy in friston. It was brilliant. However there are plenty of homemade alternatives.

I'm a coeliac, they offered an excellent choice of light lunches and delicious cakes. The staff very knowledgeable on allergies and very friendly.

Cafe looks a bit run down and is a bit tired inside, but the food was amazing!

A beautiful place to stop for a coffee or icecream. We did a walking route from Aldeburgh to Thorpness and back and this was a beautiful spot to pause after seeing the house in the clouds. One can also rent a rowing boat to take round the Meare although we didn't on this occasion. Highly recommend the icecream! Edit: Went back again a couple of days later to take a rowing boat out and more Icecream. 5 star rating unaffected! Beautiful spot.
